Albert Webb was born at Gipsy Hall ("Soldiers Died") (Linton Q2-1895 3B:512). The only Gipsy Hall would appear to be Dullingham Ley. CWGC has his father as David WEBB of 5 Six Mile Bottom. In 1887 David Webb had married his mother Martha PURKISS, who apparently died in 1897.
1901 census...Aged 6 at Lark Hall Cottages, Weston Colville with his widower father David WEBB, [35] farm labourer born Guilden Morden; sister Kate [11]; brothers Alfred [10] David [8] and William [3]. The children however are all recorded as born in Weston Colville. 1911 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Westley Bottom Farm, Westley Waterless with his father; stepmother Eliza [49] born Isleham; brothers Alfred and David (farm labourers), brother William [13] born Weston Colville and his step-sister Lilian DIVER [13] born Chesterton. He enlisted in Newmarket. On April 28th 1917 the 7th Suffolks were part of the 12th Division attack, launched in conjunction with Canadian troops, between the Scarpe and Monchy. Going over the top at 16:45, passing through the 5th Royal Berks to attack the Blue Line. They immediately came under intense machine-gun fire from Roeux. Small parties from some companies reached their objective but could go no further. All the officers except the colonel and adjutant were killed or wounded and as soon as it got dark these small parties returned to Black Line. and at 1 am the battalion, now reduced to 190 effectives, withdrew to the support lines. CWGC records 93 of the battalion killed on the 28th and only 8 have identified graves. |
